Following the arrests of Winston Blackmore and James Oler of Bountiful, British Columbia in 2009 polygamy has captured the attention of media, the legal system, and the general population of Canada. Overwhelmingly, the central discourse surrounding polygamy in the media has tended to be one of secrecy, forbidden religious practices, and oppression; this discourse of polygamy as harmful was substantiated by Chief Justice Bauman in the Reference re: Section 293 of the Criminal Code of Canada, referred to in this thesis as the Polygamy Reference.
